Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the lower abdomen to create a profile that is smoother, firmer and flatter. It is not a weight loss solution, rather it is a contouring procedure to conquer the stubborn areas resistant to exercise and diet. A tummy tuck procedure is often ideal for the following:

Your Consultation

In the initial consultation, Dr. Thomas Crabtree—our experienced plastic surgeon—will use the time to get to know you, learn about your expectations and discuss a plan to achieve your goals. He will discuss the different variables of surgery and risks. Prior to surgery you will have a good understanding of the procedure, plan and recovery. If you decide you are ready to proceed you will set a date for surgery and be given instructions on how to prepare. You will also schedule a pre-operative appointment to review your medical history, take pre-operative photographs, and complete the required paperwork for the surgical center.

Your Procedure

Dr. Crabtree offers several tummy tuck options, including extended abdominoplasty, standard abdominoplasty, limited incision abdominoplasty, and mini abdominoplasty. Additionally, Dr. Crabtree will often perform liposuction in conjunction with your abdominoplasty to enhance your overall results.

Ultimately, the technique utilized for your tummy tuck surgery will be based on your unique needs and goals. The procedure typically takes three hours and is performed under general anesthesia administered by a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist at Windward Surgical Center.

Your Recovery

You will likely have small temporary drains placed in the existing incisions beneath the skin to help remove any excess blood and fluid. Mild soreness and bruising is totally normal with a tummy tuck. The drains may be removed in 3 – 7 days. All of the sutures are under the skin and absorb. There is only glue and tape on the skin. You can return to most normal daily activities in one week. Plan on two to three weeks before resuming strenuous activity and allow several months for scars to fully fade and normal sensation to return. The results will be evident immediately but will continue to improve over the course of several weeks.
